FREE! Nutritional Classes for You! Shop with the Doc- Tuesday, June 4 and Thursday, June 6, 2013, 1 pm

Dr. April Smith, from Revolution Chiropractic, will enlighten you on the proper foods to eat in order for you to maintain good health.  On Tuesday, you will meet Dr. Smith at the Tyvola Senior Center for the classroom instruction on foods that help with your aging process. On Thursday, you will meet Dr. Smith at a nearby grocery store of her choice.  This field trip will allow you to utilize your classroom knowledge which will aid with your meal preparation decisions for future shopping trips.  We encourage all participants to attend the nutritional seminar on Tuesday in order to attend the field trip on Thursday.  Register today! There will be a DVD series of lectures from the contributing photographer, Joel Sartore, from the National Geographic magazine that will instruct you on the Fundamentals of Photography.  Lectures include making great pictures, camera equipment, lenses and focal length, shutter speeds, aperture and depth of field, and light 1.  Learn how to capture photographic stories and essays while moving beyond a still image to a photographic narrative. NEW! Tyvola Mini Golf Challenge – Monday, June 10 – Thursday, June 13, 2012, 11 – 2 pm

As you may know, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Senior Centers Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, June 17, 2013.  Join us for our mini golf challenge!  We have created a miniature golf course just for you.  Monday through Thursday, we will have a multi- hole course made out of household products, canned goods, toiletries, etc. for you to putt the ball.  All products sponsored will be donated by various businesses and then given to Second Harvest Food Bank as a donation from the Tyvola Senior Center. For those who would like to participate, we will keep track of your scores and one winner will be announced daily.  All winners will receive a prize.  Come with your game face on!  Donations are appreciated!

Make sure your voice is heard when it comes to what matters most!  Marilyn Morenz from Hospice and Palliative Care and Arthur Bartlett from Legal Services of the Southern Piedmont will collaborate to provide you with information you need to know about Advance Directives and Estate Planning.  These 2 hour long sessions will help you determine what is best for you when end of life matters are presented to you and your family. All forms will be distributed each week and notarized on the last day of class. Space is limited, please call to register!

The Alzheimer’s Support Group is back and better than ever! The Tyvola Senior Center is collaborating with the Alzheimer’s Association in order to provide mini seminars regarding various health related topics affecting the senior population. Each week community health professionals will speak and provide health related seminars to you at no charge. Dr. Pesaru will discuss the best way for you to manage your stress. Jazzercise – Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9 - 10:15 am $30 per month with Annual Discount Card, $45 per month without Annual Discount Card. Fitness that's invigorating, not intimidating! This 60-minute class pairs moderate aerobics with exercises designed to improve your strength, balance, and flexibility. Whether you're a senior or prefer low impact, you can't go wrong with this popular light version of the original Jazzercise program.

Health Suite – Persons 55 and better are eligible to use the Health Suite. Expect increased aerobic activity, an increase in lean muscle tissue, increased range of motion and joint stability as well as a decrease in body fat and resting heart rate!  Recent studies also show lowered risk of Alzheimer’s disease for regular exercisers. Health Suite Circle Groups are strength training classes that are offered by a HS Coordinator/UNCC Graduate Assistant. Northern National Parks Trip – September 27 – October 4, 2013

 

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Tyvola Senior Center presents the Northern National Parks trip highlighting Salt Lake City, Jackson Hole, Yellowstone National Park Old Faithful, the Grand Teton National Park, and Park City. This is an eight (8) day trip that includes 11 meals (7 breakfasts and 4 dinners).  If you book with us now you can save $100 per person. Senior Citizen Nutrition Program– Monday-Friday, 9:00am-2:00pm, The Tyvola Senior Center is a congregate meal site for the Mecklenburg County Senior Citizen Nutrition Program.  If you are interested in joining us for lunch and fellowship please call 704-817-5463 for important enrollment info. Daily programs are offered to all participants in this program.  Call to register for lunch!

Bingo Fridays 10:30-11:30 am*

Exercise and Fitness

Golden Exercise and Wellness- Thursday, July 11 and July 25, 2013, 10:45-11:45 am

These FREE hour-long exercise classes help you jump start your week and keep you motivated to maintain your exercise regimen.  Plan to work out for 45 minutes and then engage in a mini wellness education lecture. Weights After Work – An evening weight training class to increase bone density and muscle strength. Register on the interest sheet at the Reception Desk or by calling 704-522-6222 today!

Tai Chi – Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00 pm, $38/month with Annual Discount Card, $57/month without Annual Discount Card. Try it out-your first class for $5!

Gentle Yoga- Thursdays, from 9-10:15 am, $23 per month with annual Discount Card, $35 per month without Annual Discount Card.  Try it out-your first class for $5!

Chair Yoga- Thursday, July 18, 2013, 10:15 am

This FREE class is open to everyone, and is suitable for individuals with limited mobility. Chair yoga is adapted to provide you all of the benefits of yoga including improving strength, flexibility, posture, without getting on the floor.

Health Suite – Persons 55 and better are eligible to use the Health Suite. Expect increased aerobic activity, an increase in lean muscle tissue, increased range of motion and joint stability as well as a decrease in body fat and resting heart rate!  Recent studies also show lowered risk of Alzheimer’s disease for regular exercisers. Health Suite Circle Groups are strength training classes that are offered by a HS Coordinator/UNCC Graduate Assistant. Eligibility: Health Suite Participant with all forms up-to-date and/or *HS Coordinator approval with qualifying fitness test. Cost: $1-current annual discount cardholders, $2-participants without an ADC.

Nutritional Classes for You! Shop with the Doc- Tuesday, July 9 and July 11, 2013, 1:00 pm

Dr. April Smith, from Revolution Chiropractic, will enlighten you on the proper foods to eat in order for you to maintain good health.  On Tuesday, you will meet Dr. Smith at the Tyvola Senior Center for the classroom instruction on building your immune system as the allergy season approaches.  On Thursday, you will meet Dr. Smith at a nearby grocery store of her choice.  This field trip will allow you to utilize your classroom knowledge which will aid with your meal preparation decisions for future shopping tripsWe encourage all participants to attend the nutritional seminar on Tuesday in order to attend the field trip on Thursday.  Register today! The Tyvola Senior Center is collaborating with the Alzheimer’s Association in order to provide mini seminars regarding various health related topics affecting the senior population. Each week community health professionals will speak and provide health related seminars to you at no charge. Dr. Pesaru will discuss stress management. Oh for the good ole’ days of hand churned ice cream, sitting on the porch and enjoying one of summer’s special delights. Today the social group will be making homemade ice cream for your enjoyment and to tickle your palate! This special dessert will be available after lunch.

There will be a DVD series of lectures from the contributing photographer, Joel Sartore, from the National Geographic magazine that will instruct you on the Fundamentals of Photography.  Lectures include making great pictures, camera equipment, lenses and focal length, shutter speeds, aperture and depth of field, and light 1.  Learn how to capture photographic stories and essays while moving beyond a still image to a photographic narrative. New participants are always welcome!

Projects include making items to help make scarves and hats for Sickle Cell Anemia children ages 3 – 18 years as well as items to sell at the Senior Center. Yarn will be provided! Northern National Parks Trip – September 27 – October 4, 2013

 

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Tyvola Senior Center presents the Northern National Parks trip highlighting Salt Lake City, Jackson Hole, Yellowstone National Park Old Faithful, the Grand Teton National Park, and Park City. This is an eight (8) day trip that includes 11 meals (7 breakfasts and 4 dinners).  If you book with us now you can save $100 per person.
