February Classes

Were you here??   Did you come to the Grand Opening?  Well, it was indeed grand with over 250 people lining our hallways, taking classes, playing Wii Bowling, making greeting cards, and eating breakfast and lunch donated by Lupe’s of Huntersville, Café 100 of Huntersville, Kilwin’s of Birkdale and K&W of Cornelius and dessert by our own amazing bakers here at the center.  Mayor Tarte of Cornelius, Mayor Swain of Huntersville, (we were all thrilled when she broke out in song!) Bob Shaffer, the chair of CMSC Board of Directors, and Trena Palmer, Executive Director of CMSC were our main speakers and of course, we cut the ribbon indicating that we were truly open and ready to serve all older adults in North Mecklenburg County.   And I’m happy to say that many people took advantage of our Three Free Weeks of classes. We’ve had at least 30 new participants to join us and to purchase annual discount cards.  Phew, what a huge success.

This month is Black History Month and we have two speakers for our SPICE LECTURE who I’m sure will be very interesting and informative.  Pearlie Cureton-Borders will speak to us about how the black churches and schools have changed over the years and Deacon George Dunlap of St. Paul Baptist Church in Charlotte, who sings in their choir, will speak about the History of Black Music.  And perhaps we can convince him to serenade us as well!  Check the schedule for the dates and times for these presentations.

Last month we celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. Even though the center was open, an oversight in the calendar, no disrespect was meant to this great American man.  We all have heard of Dr. King’s amazing “I Have a Dream” speech delivered to the march on Washington on April 19, 1963, but how many of you have actually read the whole speech?  I encourage you to do so.   It is just as inspiring today as it was 49 years ago.  But I must leave you with this thought.  Of all the many parts of Dr. King’s dream, the most meaningful for me is “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”  How wonderful it will be when that dream is fully realized.

February also brings computer classes, movie days, board game playing days, Valentines’ Day, a new yoga class, a new Tai Chi Class, Ask the Computer Expert sessions, Leap Year, and a Wii Bowling Tournament not to mention all our usual activities.

Hope to see you at the center where there is always someone to greet you with a smile, answer your questions, and always something going on.
