Assistance to Internationals

International House

Clothing, Food & Utilities Services

Catholic Social Services, Charlotte Regional Office
The Charlotte Regional Office’s Material Assistance Program provides service in the form of limited assistance for rent, utilities and food. A small food pantry is maintained to serve those in emergencies. Contact Information: (704) 370-3228.

Just1Call
Provides information referral services to seniors and adults with disabilities. Services includes transportation and housing, leisure and social activities, health care services and equipment, meals and nutrition, legal services, respite for caretakers, support groups and information on Medicaid, Medicare, social security, insurance and financial aid. Loaves and Fishes
Founded and operated by local religious congregations, Loaves and Fishes provide groceries and support to people in crisis. Operates 16 food pantries across Mecklenburg County. Contact Information: (704) 523-4333.

Mecklenburg County. Department of Social Services. Economic Services Division
Benefits and services available through the Division include Work First Family Assistance (cash assistance), the Food Stamp program, the Low Income Energy Assistance Program and Families and Children's Medicaid. Contact Information: (704) 336-3150; Emergency Phone: (704) 336-2273.

Mobile Food Pantry
The Mobile Food Panty consists of refurbished beverage trucks serving as self-contained food pantries that provide food assistance to rural communities lacking substantial infrastructure. The Food Bank works in partnership with local sponsors, such as food pantries or churches, to bring the Mobile Food Pantry to these areas. Crisis Assistance Ministry
Provides emergency financial assistance, emergency housing, clothing assistance, rent and utility assistance to individuals and families in financial need. Contact Information: (704)371-3000.

Dress for Success
Provides interview suits, confidence boosts, and career development for women. Contact Information: 704-525-7706.

Harvest Kitchen
Operated by the Community Outreach Christian Ministries, the Harvest Kitchen provides food and clothing for those in need, particularly the homeless and the neighborhood children. Contact Information: (704)333-4280.

Emergency/Homeless Support Services & Section 8 Housing

Charlotte Housing Authority

Charlotte Rescue Mission
Provides food, clothing, lodging, individual and group counseling and life skills training to those battling against addiction and homelessness. It is the only free addiction recovery program in Charlotte. Contact Information: (704) 334-4635.

Mecklenburg County. Health Department. Homeless Support Services
Provides services to persons living in cars or other places not designed for human habitation, staying in shelters, or fleeing domestic violence. Contact Information: (704) 343-3790.

Second Harvest Food Bank of North Carolina
As the largest hunger relief charity in the Charlotte, North Carolina area, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina works to end hunger. Contact Information: (704) 376-1785.

The Salvation Army
Supplies food, shelter and social services for women and children who have no other place to go. Contact Information: (704)334-4731.

United Family Services' Shelter for Battered Women
Offers counseling, support and a safe haven for women and their children who are in danger of abuse from the woman's partner. Contact Information: (704)332-2513.

Urban Ministry Center
Urban Ministry Center is an inter-faith organization that serves the poor, needy and homeless with basic needs through programs such as the Soup Kitchen and Room in the Inn. Contact Information: (704)347-0278.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership, Inc. (CMHP)
CMHP is a broad based, private, nonprofit housing development and finance corporation organized to expand affordable and well-maintained housing within stable neighborhoods for low and moderate income families with a continuing interest in the ability of occupants to more fully enter the economic mainstream. Legal Services of Southern Piedmont
A non-profit law firm providing free legal services in civil matters to low-income people in the Charlotte area and west-central North Carolina. Services are provided by staff attorneys and paralegals and by hundreds of volunteer attorneys. Contact Information: (704)971-2622.

Mecklenburg County Bar Lawyer Referral Service (LRS)
An LRS referral provides a 30-minute consultation with one of their attorneys for only $50.00. Contact Information: (704) 375-8624.

Mecklenburg County Women's Commission
Provides free bi-monthly legal clinic and bi-weekly volunteer attorney services. Contact Information: (704) 336-3210.

Medicaid/Medicare

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Division of Medical Assistance
The Division of Medical Assistance manages Medicaid and NC Health Choice for Children for the state of North Carolina. Provides information on eligibility and how to apply for Medicaid benefits.

Offers five service programs to adult and/or disabled adults within the community. Adult Social Work Services, Adult Medicaid/Foodstamps, In-home Aid.
